Bensenville, Ill. – The Robert Morris Women’s Hockey team swept a series from Adrian College winning 1-0 on Friday, October 5th and 5-3 on Saturday, October 6th at The Edge in Bensenville. The Eagles are now 4-0 for the young season.
On Friday night, the Eagles started off strong with a great back and forth game against the Adrian College Bulldogs. It was a strong debut from the new freshmen including Madi Biluk, Chelsea Kasprick, Emily Wagner, Paige Gerson, and transfer student Jennifer Wilson.
The lone goal of the game came at the half way point in the third period, when a defensive error by Adrian defensemen put the puck on Chelsea Kasprick’s stick. Kasprick came in all alone against the Bulldog goalie and deked scoring a nice backhand goal to give RMU the lead. Adrian would press back in the remaining time but they were no match for RMU’s excellent defense and senior goaltender Staci Pomering. Pomering began the season with a shutout, saving all 26 shots she faced.
Saturday night was another great showcase of the talents that the RMU women’s team is sporting in this 2012-2013 season. This game had more contributors than Friday’s night win with a 5-3 victory to make them 4-0-0 this season, including two forfeit victories against Western Michigan University.
A little over half way through the first period at the 8:05 mark, RMU would get on the board when sophomore defenseman Mollie Madden scored a nice shot from the point that found the back of the net. The goal was assisted by leaders Jess Merritt and Rachel Black. Before the first period would end, Adrian would find a way to get back on the board with a goal at 2:33 of the period to tie the game 1-1.
In the second period, the RMU defensive lineup would get RMU the lead once again. Senior leader Becky Katz found herself in an optimal scoring position at 10:54 with a great shot that beat Adrian goaltender Ellyn Stanton with assists by Canadian freshmen Chelsea Kasprick and Madi Biluk. Not long after RMU took the lead Adrian found a way to get back into the game scoring a power play goal at 8:36 to even up the score. Before the period was over at 2:51, sophomore Lucy Plyer scored a beautiful backhand goal on Adrian to give RMU the lead going into the third period.
After half a period of battling, RMU added to their 3-2 lead with a go-ahead goal from sophomore Jordyn Tremain at 11:36. RMU would continue to dominate the game, but Adrian was not finished battling back into the game as they managed to beat senior goaltender Staci Pomering one last time on the power play at 2:30 to cut RMU’s lead to 4-3. With a last attempt at evening the score, the Adrian Bulldogs pulled their goalie in the remaining minutes to give them a sixth man advantage. This would work to RMU’s favor as freshmen Madi Biluk (assisted by Katz and Pomering) would capitalize on the empty net opportunity scoring her first career goal as an Eagle and solidifying a RMU victory and sweep of the Bulldogs.
Staci Pomering got the win in net facing 38 shots and saving 35 of them, while senior defensive leader Becky Katz led the RMU women’s team with a three-point night (1 goal and 2 assists). Freshmen Chelsea Kasprick and Madi Biluk recorded their first career points as Eagles.
The Eagles are on the road this weekend as they travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan to take on Grand Valley State University. The puck drops on Saturday, October 13th at 5:00pm and again on Sunday, October 14th at 1:00 P.M.
