Women’s Basketball Opens Up Season with Split at the Purdue Calumet Tournament & Win Over Clarke in Home Opener

Chicago, Ill. – The Robert Morris Women’s Basketball team split their season opening games in the Purdue Calumet University Tournament losing 78-63 to Concordia University (Mich.) on Friday, November 2nd and defeating Cornerstone University (Mich.) 65-64 on Saturday, November 3rd.  The Eagles, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Poll, then defeated Clarke University (Iowa) 76-63 in RMU’s home opener on Sunday, November 4th.  RMU has begun the season with a 2-1 record in their opening weekend.

In the season opener, the Eagles played tight with Concordia during the first ten minutes of the first half but the Cardinals opened up an 11 point lead and led 42-31 at the half.  The Cardinals extended that lead to 22 points in the second half and held on for a 78-63 win.  Yolanda De La Torre led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points while Uniqua Hampton and Ashley Collins both had nine points in the loss.

The Eagles rebounded in Saturday’s game and opened up a first half lead as large as nine points on a Renee Reed three-pointer.  However, Cornerstone rallied back to tie the game at 17-17 with 10:23 left in the half but RMU lifted their lead back up to eight points and led the Golden Eagles 34-30 at the break.

Robert Morris extended their lead to 10 points in the second half on another Renee Reed three-pointer with 17:13 to play.  Once again, Cornerstone cut into the RMU lead and trailed by one point with 10:19 left but the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to take a 58-51 lead.  Uniqua Hampton extended RMU’s lead to eight points on two occasions but the Golden Eagles made the game interesting down the stretch going on a 7-0 run in the final 2:38 but the Eagles held on for the 65-64 win.

Renee Reed led the Eagles with 14 points while Celeste Jones and Uniqua Hampton both scored 13 points.  Yolanda De La Torre chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds and was selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Eagles played their third game in as many days as they hosted Clarke University in their home opener on Sunday.  RMU opened up an eight point first half lead but Clarke got hot from behind the three-point line and opened up an 11-point lead and led 42-34 at the break.

RMU got back on track in the second half and took control of the game behind 20 points and nine rebounds from Uniqua Hampton.  Junior Celeste Jones added 17 points in the 76-63 win.

The Eagles next game is on Friday, November 9th as they host Judson University.  Tip-off is set for 6:00 P.M. at Attack Athletics in Chicago.
