Mizael Carrera Wins the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge as Men’s Cross Country Finishes in 16th Place and Women’s Team Takes 29th

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Robert Morris Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams competed in the NAIA Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College on Saturday, October 20th and RMU Men’s runner Mizael Carrera took first place in the event.

The Eagles Men’s team finished in 16th place out of 34 teams, which included NAIA ranked teams Saint Francis (#3), Sawnee State (#6), Aquinas (#10), Cornerstone (#20), and Indiana Wesleyan (#21).  Mizael Carrera led the team with his first place finish, running a personal best of 24:49 which was just six seconds off the RMU record despite the course’s muddy condition.

Other RMU men’s finishers were Alejandro Garcia (67th/26:54), Phillipe McNeal (88th/27:07), Jacob Hernandez (123rd/27:52), Travis Lewis (152nd/28:56), Oscar Avila (209th/31:24), and Edgar Olayo (215th/32:14).  The race consisted of 351 runners.

The Eagles Women’s team finished in 29th place out of 32 schools and they were led by Rachel Day, who finished in 136th place with a time of 21:01.  RMU lost its top runner in the last 200 meters to a hamstring injury.  Other Eagles finishers were Kiersten Norgard (175th/22:09), Idalis Valdivia (180th/22:25), Jillian Hendzlick (183rd/22:27), Amanda Kostic (200th/24:23), and Virginia Garcia (203rd/24:44).  The race consisted of 355 runners.

The Eagles Cross Country teams are off until Saturday, November 3rd when they compete in the CCAC Conference Championship Meet.  The meet will be held Channahon Community Park in Channahon, Illinois.
