Arlington Heights, Ill. – The Robert Morris Football team won its sixth game in a row with a convincing 42-9 win over Concordia University (Mich.) at Morris Field on Saturday, October 6th. The victory raises the Eagles, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, record to 6-1 this season.
Both team’s offenses were stopped on their first possessions but RMU’s Deshawn Weaver returned a punt 47 yards to the Cardinal 23-yard line to set up the Eagles first score. Three plays later, quarterback Matt Westerkamp connected with TaDarrius Douglas on a 10-yard touchdown pass and Trae Berndt’s extra point was good for a 7-0 Eagles lead.
Six plays into Concordia’s next possession, defensive back Dae’Von Scarber intercepted a Tyler Steele pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown and a Robert Morris 14-0 lead. The Eagles tacked on another score to begin the second quarter to build 21-0 lead when Westerkamp found running back sensation Lamont Wims open on a 22-yard TD reception.
The Cardinals offense put together an impressive drive moving down to the RMU three-yard line but the Eagles defense forced a Concordia fumble that Dominique Sashington recovered on their own five-yard line to put a stop to the Cardinal scoring threat. However, three plays later the RMU offense was called for a holding penalty in their own end zone resulting in a safety to make the score 21-2.
The Concordia defense made another big play late in the half, intercepting a Westerkamp pass to give them the ball on the Eagle 12-yard line. Three plays later and after a false start penalty, quarterback Nathan Smith hit DeMario Burton for 20-yard touchdown to cut the RMU lead to 20-9 at the half.
The second half was all Robert Morris with Lamont Wims scoring consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter on a 37-yard run and on one-yard plunge to stretch the RMU lead to 35-9 after three quarters. With 13:44 to play in the game, Westerkamp connected on his third touchdown pass of the day hitting Sean Zingshiem for a five-yard score for the 42-9 victory.
