Bourbonnais, Ill. – The Robert Morris Women’s Basketball team lost to St. Catharine College (Ky.) by the score of 69-68 in the opening game of the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The loss dropped the Eagles’ record to 8-4 on the year.
The Eagles had the lead for almost the entire first half and never trailed in the opening stanza. However, the game was tied 32-32 as both teams headed to the locker rooms.
St. Catharine took their first lead of the game just seven seconds into the second half but the Eagles once again regained the lead and led by as many as eight points with 10:58 to play in the game. St. Catharine retook the lead at 54-53 with 7:11 remaining and the rest of the game was a back and forth affair with nine lead changes and seven ties in the second half.
RMU trailed 65-63 with under a minute to play, but Uniqua Hampton hit a jumper with 47 seconds to play to tie things up and was fouled on the play to set up a three-point play. Hampton hit the free throw to put the Eagles up 66-65. Hampton then stole the ball from St. Catharine with 29 seconds to play and passed the ball to Ashley Collins, who was fouled and sent to the line. Collins hit the first shot but missed the second to give the Eagles a 67-65 lead with just 26 seconds to go.
Alexis Griffin of St. Catharine was fouled and went to the line with 16 seconds to go and made one of two shots from the charity strip to close the gap to 67-66. Ashley Segers was then immediately fouled on the inbounds pass and was sent to the line for RMU. Segers hit the first shot but missed the second and RMU led 68-66. St. Catharine went down the floor and Alexis Griffin hit a three-pointer with seven seconds to play to give them a 69-68 lead. The Eagles’ Danisha Cole threw up a desperation shot as the clock expired but her shot was off the mark.
Uniqua Hampton once again led the Eagles in scoring with 21 points and Danisha Cole was next with nine points in the loss.
The Eagles take on Wilberforce University (Ohio) on Saturday, December 8th in day two of the Holiday Inn Express Classic at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
