Bourbonnais, Ill. – The Robert Morris Women’s Basketball team closed out the Holiday Inn Express Classic with an 80-69 victory over Wilberforce University (Ohio) on Saturday, December 8th at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. The victory raised the Eagles’ record to 9-4 on the season.
The Eagles started the game off well and opened up a 17-7 lead on a Celeste Jones bucket with 14:30 left in the first half. However, Wilberforce tied the game up at 23-23 with 9:36 to go and took a 27-24 lead with 8:36 to play in the opening half. Wilberforce stretched the lead to four points with 3:48 left but the Eagles came back to tie the game at 36-36 to end the half.
The Eagles came to play in the second half and took a five-point lead on a Shannon Clark lay-up with 17:26 to play and RMU stretched their lead to 55-45 on a Celeste Jones’ three-pointer with 11:24 to go. The Eagles kept up the offensive pressure and pulled away from Bulldogs, opening up a 14-point lead on an Aubrey Sparrey three-point shot with 7:55 left in the game. Wilberforce cut into the RMU lead, trailing the Eagles 70-63 with 5:41 left but RMU once again extended their lead to 13 points and held on for the 80-69 win.
Junior Uniqua Hampton was outstanding again, scoring a game high 25 points and grabbing nine rebounds while Yolanda De La Torre scored 14 points and had 12 rebounds. Ashley Segers added 13 points, Celeste Jones scored 12 points, and Aubrey Sparrey chipped in with 10 points in the win.
The Eagles host Bethel College (Ind.) on Tuesday, December 11th at Attack Athletics. Tip-off is set for 6:00 P.M. and fans can listen to the game live on the Eagle Sports Network.
