Naples, Fla. – The 24th ranked Robert Morris Football team traveled to sunny Florida and shut-out Ave Maria University for a 21-0 victory on Saturday, October 20th. The victory raises the Eagles record to 7-1 on the season.
The Eagles opened up the scoring just 23 seconds into the game when the NAIA’s leading rusher, Lamont Wims, broke off a 66-yard touchdown run on RMU’s second play from scrimmage. Trae Berndt connected on the point after and the Eagles led 7-0. The touchdown was Wims’ 12th rushing touchdown of the year and 16th overall.
Robert Morris made it 14-0 with 1:30 left in the first quarter on a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Westerkamp to Deshawn Weaver. Weaver now has four touchdowns this season.
Westerkamp threw his 17th touchdown of the season to TaDarrius Douglas on 10-yard toss to give the Eagles a 21-0 lead with 3:19 to play in the first half. Douglas has six touchdowns in 2012.
The Eagles defense had a strong showing, allowing Ave Maria to gain only 194 total yards on the day in posting their second shut-out of the 2012 season. Tom Hughes, Doug Sachtleban, and Dae’Von Scarber all had interceptions for RMU.
Lamont Wims rushed for 150 yards on the day to up his NAIA leading yard total to 1,181.
Robert Morris hosts Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday, October 27th at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 P.M. and the can be watched live on the Eagles Sports Network.
