Bensenville, Ill. – The #20 ranked Robert Morris Men’s Soccer team upset #7 ranked Bethel University (Tenn.) 1-0 in overtime on a last second goal by Patryk Gorajewski. The victory marks the first time the Eagles defeated a NAIA Top 10 opponent and they remain undefeated this season with a record of 5-0-1.
The first half was controlled by the Eagles as they outshot the Wildcats 7-3 in the period including a Gordy Gurson shot off of the crossbar. However, the game remained scoreless at the break.
The second half was a physical affair with 26 fouls called in the half as both team’s defenses held strong and kept the game scoreless at the end of the 90 minutes. More of the same defensive battle took place in the overtime period with one shot on goal in the extra time. However, that shot was the one that mattered as Eagles midfielder Patryk Gorajewski hammered a shot from 40 yards out that found the top corner with just one second remaining in overtime to stun the #7 Wildcats and put the Eagles and their fans in a frenzy.
RMU goalkeeper Milco Risteski made five saves to earn the win and his third shut-out of the year.
“I have never been involved in a game that ended that way before,” stated Eagles Head Coach Jake Truty. “I’m shocked and excited about the win and couldn’t be happier for my boys. They worked hard and played their hearts out to beat a very strong Bethel team. This is a great way to close out our non-conference schedule and gear up for conference play.”
The Eagles will open up CCAC Conference play against the University of Saint Francis on Saturday, September 22nd as the second game of a doubleheader with the RMU women’s team. The women kick-off at 4:00 P.M. with the men’s game following at 6:30 P.M at Redmond Athletic Complex in Bensenville, Illinois.
